Мэдээллийн систем нь байгууллага, бизнесийн үйл ажиллагааг дэмжих, автоматжуулах, удирдлагыг шийдвэр гаргалтанд шаардлагатай мэдээллээр цаг тухайд хангах, мэдээлэл боловсруулалтыг боловсронгуй болгох нэгэн төрлийн хэрэгсэл юм. <big>Мэдээллийн систем</big> гэдэг нь мэдээллийг боловсруулж хөгжүүлдэг компьютер болон хүмүүсийн оролцооноос бүрдсэн систем юм. Энэ нэр томьёог заримдаа компьютерийн систем, компьютержсэн мэдээллийн санг ажиллуулдаг программ хангамж гэх хязгаарлагдмал хоёрхон зүйл дээр ашигладаг. Мэдээллийн систем гэдэг ухагдахууныг ихэвчлэн эрдэм шинжилгээний судалгаанд ашигладаг ба мэдээллийг цуглуулах, бий болгох, түгээх, ашиглах гэсэн үйл ажиллагаа явуулдаг байгууллагын харилцаа холбоо, хүмүүс, техник хангамж, программ хангамж бүхий цогц систем гэж ойлгож болно. Ямар ч мэдээллийн систем нь үйл ажиллагааны болон удирдлагын шийдвэр гаргалтанд туслах зорилготой байдаг. Өргөн утгаараа, энэ нэр томьёо нь байгууллагын хэрэглэгчдийн мэдээллийн харилцаа холбооны технологи гэсэн ойлголтонд хамаарагдах бa хүмүүс ихэвчлэн бизнесийн үйл ажиллагааг дэмжих зорилгоор энэхүү технологийг ашигладаг байна. Зарим судлаачид мэдээллийн систем, компьютерийн систем, бизнесийн үйл ажиллагааны ялгааг маш дэлгэрэнгүй тайлбарласан байдаг. Үүнд: мэдээллийн систем нь МХХТ(Мэдээллийн Харилцаа Холбооны Технологи)-ийн бүрэлдэхүүн хэсэг боловч яг ч МХХТ-той нягт холбоотой биш байдаг байна. Харин МС(Мэдээллийн Систем) нь мэдээллийн технологитой ямар хамааралтайд анхаарлаа хандуулах хэрэгтэй. Харин мэдээллийн систем нь бизнесийн үйл ажиллагааг хянахад тусалдаг.
Олон төрлийн давуу талыг бий болгодог мэдээллийн системийн бас нэгэн төрөл бол ажлын систем юм. Ажлын систем гэдэг нь хэрэглэгчдэд тодорхой бүтээгдэхүүн, үйлчилгээг үйлдвэрлэх, хүргэх зорилгоор эх үүсвэрийг ашиглан үйлдвэрлэл болон үйл ажиллагаандаа бэлддэг хүмүүс, машины цогц систем юм. МС нь боловсруулах (дамжуулах, хадгалах, сэргээх, ашиглах, харуулах) мэдээлэлд зориулан үйл ажиллагаа явуулдаг ажлын систем юм. Ийм учраас мэдээллийн систем гэдэг нь нөгөө талаас үйл ажиллагааны систем болон мэдээллийн тогтолцоо хоёрын хоорондын хамаарал юм.

Мэдээллийн технологууд нь удирдлагуудад нээлттэй хамгийн чухал бөгөөд үнэ цэнэтэй нөөц юм. Олон компаниудын хувьд Гүйцэтгэх захирал, Санхүүгийн албаны дарга, Техникийн албаны дарга, Үйл ажиллагааны захиралууд нь удирдлагыг гартаа авч, үүний сацуу мэдээллийн технологи хариуцсан захирал гэдэг нэг шинэ албан тушаал бий болгосон байна.
